Midweek finds are worth mustering the energy for and won’t cost a week’s paycheck.
1) Silverlake Screening ($$)
Kick off Monday with happy hour on the patio of Mixville Bar, Silverlake or try your luck with Malo for Monday night dollar tacos and cheap margaritas + Attend L.A. premiere screening of Frank & Cindy (May 3, 9:30pm) – the documentary of the aftermath of 80s one-hit wonder, OXO’s Frank Garcia, through the eyes of his camera toting son + Sidle up to the bar at the highly anticipated, just opened, whiskey watering hole, Thirsty Crow, Silverlake, but only if you don’t have a 9am Tuesday. Kristin suggests: Stream the 2003 documentary by Johnson & Johnson heir Born Rich starring his trust fund friends and the recently released We Live in Public film documenting the real-life exploits of dot-com pioneer Josh Harris and his alter-ego “Lovey.” Saw this one at Sundance ’09 and have been haunted ever since.
2) That Dog Can Sing! ($$)
Follow the winding road to Beverly Glen Circle to dine at Smith Brother’s Vibrato, Bel Air. This grill and jazz club features live music every night and an awesome side of mac n’ cheese. Check the calendar to see who’s stopping by for a jam session – Barbara Morrison (May 11) is always a crowd pleaser. Kristin suggests: Go May 25th when Influence Jazz plays two sets with (of all people) Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane singing Sinatra and the like – close your eyes and Brian Griffin croons!
2) Stay Home and Watch TV ($)
Sometimes that’s the best plan. Before you fire up that flat screen, first make a rocket run to your favorite gourmet food truck. Much of it is healthy, affordable and damn good! Here’s some of my faves: Kogi BBQ, Baby’s Badass Burgers, The Grilled Cheese Truck and the newest moveable feast to roam the road Munchie Machine + Back home, tummy full, tune in to IFC.com (Independent Film Channel). Make it a mini-marathon watching all the episodes leading up to this week’s season premieres of the bizarre, puppet-infested gastric phenom Food Party with Thu Tran (not really intended for children) and Sam Mason’s kitchen cabaret of indie rockers Dinner with the Band. Guests include Rufus Wainwright, The Mountain Goats and Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings.
Event Watch: Tickets still available (check reputable ticket brokers) for Sting and The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Concert at The Hollywood Bowl (June 15). Listen to recent Sting interview on NPR’s “Talk of the Nation” podcast.
Have fun and tell ’em “Kristin sent me.”
